Most website complaints are not design complaints. A checkout that loses orders on a weak connection, a booking form that double books, a page that takes nine seconds to appear: these are code problems, and they need a developer rather than a fresh coat of paint. We work on the inside of websites, keeping them running for years instead of launching them and walking away. Where a theme will do the job, we will say so and save you the build, because custom code is only worth writing when it earns its keep. That judgement is the first thing we offer, before any invoice. If what you actually need is a fresh look rather than working software, that is a different trade and we will name it.
The development jobs we take on
The work falls into four broad types, and they often arrive together. A business has outgrown the platform it started on, or a plugin has been abandoned by the person who wrote it, or a feature the site was promised years ago was never built. We assess the site first, then say plainly whether the job is a repair, a rebuild of one part, or something that should not be attempted at all. That last answer is more common than clients expect, and it saves money every time. We have rescued more sites than we have rebuilt, and the rescued ones are usually the better value for the business that owns them.

We will turn down work that should not be done. Rebuilding a healthy site from scratch because a developer prefers a newer framework is a poor use of anyone’s money, and we will say so rather than take the invoice. If the fix is a fifteen minute configuration, we will tell you that too, even though there is no project fee in it. A quote should describe the outcome you are buying, not the hours we expect to spend reaching it.
Why version control and handover matter
Every change we make is committed, so there is a record of what altered, when and why. If a new feature breaks something six months later, the cause is findable in minutes rather than guessed at over a weekend. Sites without that history are the ones where a small edit becomes an outage, because nobody can tell which change did the damage. A single rogue line can take a checkout offline for a day. When you ring us about a fault, we can look at what changed rather than guess at it.
At the end of a build you get the code, the notes and a written account of how the site is put together. Some clients stay with us for ongoing work and some take it in house; either is fine. Owning your own build is not a favour we do you, it is the baseline. How a development job runs
Code work can look opaque from the outside, so we keep the sequence open and visible. Each stage ends with something you can see: a written brief, a test address, a list of what was changed and why. Nothing is deployed to the live site until you know it is coming. If a change carries any risk, we say so beforehand and agree the quiet hour together.
Read the site
We go through the existing build, the plugins, the database and the hosting to understand what is really going on before proposing anything at all.
Write the brief
The problem, the fix and the limits set out in plain English, with a price for the work and a date for completion you can hold us to.
Build on a copy
Development happens on a duplicate of the live site, so your customers never see a half finished change while it is still in progress.
Test the edges
Forms, payments, logins and the awkward paths tested with real data, including the cases that only appear once a month or once a year.
Deploy and document
The fix goes live at a quiet hour, a backup is kept, and the change is written up so the next developer is not left guessing at what happened.
Development questions, answered plainly
Can you work on a site another developer built?
Yes, and it is common. We read what is there, work out how it was put together and tell you what we can fix and what would be cheaper to rebuild. We do not criticise the previous developer to win the work; the site’s behaviour is the evidence.
What does a custom feature cost?
It is priced per feature once we understand it. A quote form with validation runs to a fraction of what a booking system with availability logic costs. You get a fixed figure before the build starts and a change note if the scope moves.
Will you explain what you changed?
Always. You get the commit history and a short written summary in plain English. We do not hide behind jargon to keep you dependent on us, and if you want to take the code over yourself, we will help you do it.
Do you maintain sites after launch?
Many clients keep a small monthly arrangement for updates, backups and monitoring. Others hold the site themselves and call us when something specific needs building. Both work, and there is no lock in either way.
Can you speed up an old site?
Often, yes. We measure where the time actually goes, which is usually a handful of heavy scripts rather than the hosting itself. Where the platform genuinely cannot be made fast, we will tell you that instead of selling months of tuning.
When to hire a developer
Where a developer is needed
Bring in a developer when the platform cannot do what the business needs, when a site has become slow or fragile, or when a feature must be built that no plugin sells. It helps most when you can describe the outcome you want rather than the technology you think you need. A clear description of the problem is worth more than a preference for a particular framework. If you can show us the problem, we can usually show you the smallest fix that solves it.
Where a developer is not
If the site just needs a fresh look, that is a design job. Where the platform you already run makes the build easier, WordPress development covers it.
