A theme is a starting point, not a shop
Shopify web design in Cavan for stores that need more than a theme
Ceol Digital builds Shopify stores for merchants who have outgrown the stock theme. Custom sections, a checkout tuned to your margins, app choices that justify their monthly fee and a store that still loads quickly with a large catalogue. We work on Shopify every week, and we will tell you plainly when Shopify is the wrong platform for what you sell. If you are still choosing a platform, that is a conversation worth having first. If you are already on Shopify and the store underperforms, that is a shorter discussion.
- Sections built for your catalogue
- App stack cut back to what works
- Checkout tuned to margin

Shopify hands you hosting, security and a checkout that works out of the box. What it does not hand you is a shop shaped around your products or your margins. That is where the build comes in. Most stores we pick up are running a stock theme with a dozen apps stacked on top, each one slowing the store and duplicating what another app already does. We strip that back first, then build the sections your catalogue actually needs. No single app on that list is bad on its own. Together they are weight, cost and confusion.
What a Shopify build covers
Shopify is a hosted platform, so the work looks different from an open source build. You are not managing servers or patching plugins. You are deciding how the store is shaped: which sections a product page carries, how variants and bundles are shown, how collections are filtered, what the cart offers at the point of decision, and which apps are worth their subscription. Get those decisions right and the store feels made for the products. Get them wrong and you have a theme with a logo dropped into the header. Deciding is the skill, and it is the part most themes leave to you.
The engagement breaks into four areas, and the app decisions are written down so you can see what each one costs and saves:
Custom theme sections
Product, collection and content sections designed around how your items are actually bought, built as Shopify sections your team can rearrange.
Cart and checkout tuning
Upsells, delivery thresholds, wallet payments and the small details that make a buyer trust the page, lifted without irritating them.
App selection and cleanup
We audit what you pay for each month, cut the overlap, keep what earns its fee and set up the replacements properly. Nothing stays installed merely because it was there when we arrived.
Migration and launch
Products, customers and orders moved in, collections built, redirects checked and a launch plan that keeps the store selling through the switch.
If your catalogue is small and a stock theme already sells it, a custom build is money you do not need to spend. We will say that on the first call rather than bury it in a proposal. The audit behind that answer is a small fixed job and you keep the findings either way.

Why the stock theme stops working
Stock themes are built to suit thousands of stores, so they hedge. They carry sections you will never use, weight you cannot remove and layouts that fit nobody’s products exactly. That is fine until a catalogue grows or margins tighten, and then the theme becomes the ceiling. Every extra section you cannot delete is load time. Every app you cannot remove is a monthly bill. Every awkward product page is a customer who leaves to find the size chart somewhere clearer. A stock theme is not a bad product. It is a general answer to a specific question. Removing weight is harder than adding it, which is exactly why it rarely gets done.
Two stores in our client work sit on this stack: Grease Monkey Direct and TruckElectrics. Both sell parts and equipment where the product data matters more than the photography, and both need filtering, fitment details and a cart that copes with a large trade order. That is the kind of catalogue where the build has to follow the buying process. A theme bought off the shelf was never going to manage it, and no amount of app stacking fixes a structure that was never designed for the product. If your range is shaped like theirs, the same questions apply.
Apps that have a job
How a Shopify project runs
The stages are short, and the structure is approved before design is signed off, because structure is the expensive thing to change later. Shopify rewards a firm shape, and shape is cheapest to get right at the start. You see that structure as a written plan before a single section is built.
Audit the store and the apps
We look at what you run now: the theme, the subscriptions, the speed, the pages that sell and the ones that do not.
Set the structure
Sections, filters, variants and the buying path drawn up and signed off as a written plan, so you know exactly what you are approving and why.
Build the sections
Custom Shopify sections built and loaded with your real products, so you judge them with your own catalogue inside.
Trim and connect
Apps cut back to the ones with a job, integrations connected and the checkout tested with live orders before launch.
Launch and watch
Migration checked, redirects in place and the first weeks of orders reviewed for the points where buyers hesitate. Where a section is not working, it gets changed.
Shopify questions from merchants
Is Shopify better than WooCommerce?
They solve different problems. Shopify carries hosting, security and checkout for a monthly fee, so you own less overhead and no updates. WooCommerce gives you control, lives inside WordPress and suits a store that also needs content. We build on both and recommend the one that fits your margins and your team.
Can you make a Shopify store look different from the stock themes?
Yes. The themes in the Shopify store are starting points. We build custom sections on top, or a theme from the ground up, so the layout follows your products. The work stays inside Shopify’s own structure, which means a platform release does not undo it.
How do you cut app costs?
By listing what each app costs per month and what it actually does for the shop. Where two apps overlap we keep one. Where a paid app is doing something Shopify now handles natively we remove it. The saving often funds part of the build.
Will a move to Shopify lose our search rankings?
Not if the move is planned. Every old address gets redirected to its new counterpart, titles and descriptions are carried across and the site is submitted to Search Console after launch. We check the rankings in the weeks after the switch rather than assuming they survived.
Do you work on existing Shopify stores?
Frequently. Some stores need the theme rebuilt, others only need the checkout and the app stack sorted out. After an audit we will tell you which one yours is, and the audit is a small fixed job with no obligation to continue.
Who Shopify suits
A good fit
Shopify suits a merchant who wants the platform to handle hosting, security and payments, and would rather put the budget into the store itself. It fits a growing catalogue, a business selling into several countries, or a team with no technical staff that does not want to run updates. It also fits a retailer happy to pay a monthly platform fee in exchange for not owning that overhead. The trade off is a bill that never stops, which suits some businesses and not others. None of that list is unusual for a shop with a serious catalogue.
Look elsewhere
If the shop sits beside a content business or a service range that needs to rank, WooCommerce web design keeps everything in one system. When you need the store found as well as built, an ecommerce SEO agency works that side of it, and website SEO covers the site the shop sits on. If the platform choice is still open, website design is the broader start, and a web developer keeps any custom code maintained between projects. Both platforms are good tools, and the right one depends on the shape of your business rather than on fashion.
